Town Hall Meetings: A great way to advocate!by Kat King, AHDI-F
AHDI-West President-Elect
I have been honored to represent our region and our association on several trips to Washington, DC. Some of those visits included face-to-face conversations with our senators or congressmen, but we generally share our message with their healthcare aides. These individuals have become well-versed in our industry over the past few years, showing the inroads and impact we are having at the federal level.
I have served on the AHDI Legislative Issues Group, and have become familiar with the information we need to convey to our legislators; EHR adoption including the narrative report (the patient’s full story), health information exchange, conversion of narrative text into codified data, and the need for workforce development funding. They are not difficult messages to understand, but they won’t be included in legislation unless WE convey the messages to our legislators!

Has spring sprung in your area yet? Here in Salt Lake City it keeps trying, and it teases us once in a while, but just when we think we are going to see some warm weather we wake up to a foot of snow on the ground and freezing weather. It’s very pretty, but a little concerned about the eventual spring runoff that may occur if it warms up too fast. Hard to decide what is best! Just have to have patience and wait and see!
Lots of events have sprung up across AHDI and AHDI-West, even if spring hasn’t! They are all included in this awesome newsletter, so please check them out!
Recent government legislation (the HITECH ACT) is forcing all medical facilities to meet “meaningful use” with regards to their clinical data. Over the next few years, medical facilities are being incentivized to convert their clinical data into a digital system. Once the incentive program is over, penalties will be assessed to medical facilities that do not meet “meaningful use”. With this in mind, how does the Medical Transcription Company fit into this equation and help medical facilities meet meaningful use without a drastic change to a physician’s current behavior.
