So, you think you know everything about HIPAA. Think again! HIPAA and Release of Information are two evolving topics that healthcare documentation specialists need to stay abreast of in order to ensure compliance and avoid penalties associated with inappropriate disclosures of PHI. This educational opportunity provides an overview of new changes pertaining to HIPAA, the recommendations for release of information from the Office of Civil Rights, and the relationship between the new HIPAA changes and the OCR’s recommendations as well as their implications in the workplace.
MEET THE PRESENTER: Dr. Martin has worked in HIM since 1996. Her doctorate is in business administration with a focus in leadership, and she holds a master’s degree in strategic leadership. She previously served as an MT supervisor at a large teaching university; owned a transcription company for 8 years (served as Privacy and Security Officer); taught transcription, MIS, and HIM courses at Washtenaw Community College, the University of Cincinnati, and for Baker College; was the HIM and MIS program director for Baker College of Clinton Twp for 2 years; and currently is the HIM Director for Southeast Health in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She has held numerous volunteer roles at the local chapter, state, and national levels, including served as President of MAMT in 2002 and on the AAMT/AHDI BOD from 2004-2006 (Treasurer in 2005).
