Troy Hagen, lead author, will provide an overview of the findings and the latest medical advancements in EMS, and how the results can be used to promote healthcare activities and involvement in healthcare reform.

Troy Hagen, MBA, EMT-P is the Director of Ada County Paramedics in Boise, Idaho. Troy has been involved in Emergency Medical Services for 23 years. Troy holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and a Master’s in Business Administration. He is a frequent lecturer on EMS leadership, management, and finance. He also served as Medical Commissioner and Incident Commander for the 2009 Special Olympic World Winter Games.

Troy is President-Elect for the National EMS Management Association (NEMSMA) and the Finance Committee Chair for the National EMS Advisory Council.

Gary David, PhD is the project coordinator for the Bentley University project on the creation and use of healthcare documentation. He has studied the work of medical transcription, the uses of speech recognition technology and EHRs, physician attitudes toward medical records, the work of clinical documentation improvement specialists, and others who routinely make use of healthcare documentation.

Dr. David presented the results from the 2011 Survey of Medical Transcriptionists conducted by the presenter and a team from Bentley University. The 2011 Survey is a follow-up to the previous survey of the profession from 2007. The session will discuss changes to the profession based on the survey results, as well as the broader position of the MT in the changing world of healthcare documentation.

Jay Thomas, MD, PhD, current Chair and Associate Professor of Medicine, Department of Supportive Care Medicine, City of Hope. Dr Thomas will discuss the changing role of palliative and supportive care in the treatment of cancer patients. The success and failure rates for different types of cancers will be reviewed along with new developments on the horizon to assist people living with cancer.

Leslie Popplewell, MD, Associate Professor of Hematology/Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, City of Hope. Dr. Popplewell will review the history of stem cell transplantation, sources of donor cells, and applications.

Then, to add a fun twist, our own Chad Sines, MS, AHDI-F, MBA (or is that OWNN? – AHDI’s Outreach Workgroup for News and Networking Group) will provide a social media blitz (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc) for the practicing MT, component, employer, and personal life. Learn how to better leverage social media regardless of your current work situation.

Many professionals contribute to producing medical records today, including medical transcription editors, medical insurance specialists for coding, billing, and reimbursement, and quality analysts.  The process of entering the data varies based on market demands and incentives to supply a networked solution to multiple facilities, hospitals, and workflow patterns.  Healthcare documentation will continue to evolve with sophisticated technologies and modified roles. The career pathway exists for individuals who would like to work closely in a clinical setting to assist the physician and staff in tracking medical information in real time.

Commonly referred to as medical scribes, Clinical Information Managers are an important element to the allied healthcare system, providing physicians and clinicians with the efficiencies in documenting patient encounters in real time.  The demand for electronic health records to escalate our nation’s medical care has never been greater.

Working closely together, efficiencies are created for the patient.  Documentation is captured electronically and organized in a central database, helping to reduce the number of duplicate laboratory test and exams.  Health information exchange in its present form is very disparate.  Many silos exist.  We need professionals within our healthcare documentation sector to spread the resources, skill sets, and talents to advance allied healthcare in the United States to its finest.  This is also a new job market that can potentially reduce unemployment.  Medical scribes may be employed through hospitals, surgical centers, or specialty clinics.

All allied healthcare documentation professionals play a vital role in the delivery of the healthcare system.  Together, we can help solve complex documentation and workflow issues and allow our wings of knowledge to capture the essence of patient-centered quality healthcare.  Consider cross training, blending of skills, or retooling education to enter a rapidly growing field in high demand.  Online distance learning education can open the door to new opportunities to be filled by medical language specialists, medical insurance specialists, or clinical information managers.
